Deadly Attack by Gunmen Leaves 21 Dead in Heipang Village, Plateau State
Gunmen believed to be herders have struck once again, leaving a trail of devastation in Heipang village within the Barkin Ladi local government area of Plateau State.
The horrifying incident resulted in the tragic loss of 21 innocent lives, with an additional 13 individuals left injured.
The village had already been targeted earlier this year, casting a dark shadow over the safety of the community.
The Operation Safe Haven, a multi-security taskforce entrusted with maintaining peace within the state, confirmed the grim events that unfolded.
According to Captain Ola James, the spokesperson of the taskforce, the attack occurred at approximately 1:00 am on Thursday.
The gunmen managed to catch the village off-guard by evading checkpoints that had been established as a preemptive measure due to an early warning signal indicating potential bandit activity.
Captain Ola James expressed his distress over the incident, sharing, “There was an early warning signal that some bandits could launch attacks in the area which prompted the operation to mount checkpoints in the area but the bandits followed another route, and attacked the community.
We have deployed our men to restore law and order in the area.”
This heart-wrenching event marks the second time that Heipang village has been targeted within the span of two months. In June of 2023, the village had already experienced a similar tragedy, claiming the lives of two villagers and leaving the community in a state of shock and sorrow.
The Plateau State community, once again, finds itself grappling with the aftermath of a senseless act of violence.
