Kano, Kano State – The Department of State Services (DSS) has firmly denied allegations that its operatives arrested one of the judges from the Kano governorship election petition tribunal. This statement comes in the wake of controversial rulings regarding the 2023 Kano state gubernatorial election.

The tribunal’s decision on Wednesday, September 20, which resulted in the removal of Governor Abba Yusuf from office, led to accusations by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Sanusi Bature. Bature claimed that the judges handling the case were subjected to threats, and one of them was purportedly arrested.

However, in a statement to PRNigeria on Friday, September 22, Peter Afunanya, the spokesperson for the nation’s secret police, vehemently refuted these allegations. Afunanya stated, “This is a very ridiculous statement. Arresting judges for what reason? It is not true, please.”

The Kano Tribunal Judge, delivered judgment via Zoom, declared Nasiru Gawuna as the victor of the 2023 poll. In response, Governor Yusuf and his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), have expressed their intention to appeal the verdict at a higher court.
In a related development, a 24-hour curfew was imposed in Kano state following the election petitions tribunal’s decision to remove Governor Yusuf from office. Commissioner of Police (CP) Muhammad Gumel, in a personally signed statement on Wednesday, September 20, revealed that a combined team of security operatives had been deployed across major cities to enforce the curfew.

However, in another twist, the government lifted the 24-hour curfew on Thursday, September 21, in an effort to restore normalcy and allow residents to resume their daily activities.
