The 2024 ceremony, held in London on January 15th, saw some legendary names etch their stories further into footballing folklore, while new stars began their ascent into the firmament. Let’s raise a metaphorical golden trophy to all the winners!

No surprise here, folks. The ageless Lionel Messi, defying time and gravity in equal measure, claimed his seventh FIFA The Best Men’s Player award. Leading Argentina to Copa America glory and Inter Miami to an MLS Cup final appearance, Messi proved that his magic wand is still very much in working order. Guardiola and Wiegman: Masterminds on the Touchline:

Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, architect of yet another treble, unsurprisingly bagged the FIFA The Best Men’s Coach award. His tactical genius and unwavering belief in his players continue to redefine footballing artistry. Meanwhile, Sarina Wiegman, who steered England to a heartbreaking World Cup final defeat before guiding the Netherlands to victory in the European Championship, was named the FIFA The Best Women’s Coach. Her tactical acumen and ability to inspire her teams are truly remarkable.

Lionel Messi Clinches 2024 FIFA The Best Men’s Player Award

Lionel Messi has been crowned The Best FIFA men’s player of the year.

The 36-year-old Argentine picked up the individual honor ahead of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe during the award ceremony held in London on Monday night.

The latest accolade is the third FIFA best award for the diminutive Argentine – following similar triumphs in 2019 and 2022. He is also the first player to reach the milestone.


Messi was, however, conspicuously absent at the awards ceremony. He is on a pre-season tour with his club Inter Miami.

Messi won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. While he could not help Inter Miami to their first trophy in the club’s history.


In other awards of the night, Pep Guardiola won the men’s coach of the year award after securing a treble with Manchester City.
