Obaseki Is Owing Civil Servants Arrears Of Six Months APC Guber Candidate Faults 70,000 Minimum Wage, Refers To It As

0

Sen Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress, APC, gubernatorial candidate in Edo State has taken a swipe at the governor, Godwin Obaseki over the approval of ₦70,000 as the minimum wage for workers in the state.

Okpebholo, in a statement issued to journalists on Friday on the political developments in the state ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, said the minimum wage for workers is a “Greek Gift”.

Okpebholo also described the minimum wage announcement for civil servants as a deliberate distraction, insisting that Obaseki should address real issues.

The APC candidate further challenged Obaseki to give accountability of N5 billion approved by the Federal Government as palliative to cushion the hardship on civil servants.

He recalled that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved N5 billion for each state and the FCT in 2023 to enable them to procure food items for distribution to the poor and pay civil servants a certain amount for six months, but Edo state civil servants did not receive the money.

Okpebholo alleged that Obaseki had kept aside the N5 billion to pursue the governorship election in September.

He said: “Governor Obaseki is actually owing Edo civil servants arrears of six months.

“Like other states, Edo got N5 billion from the federal government to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal. In FCT, civil servants were paid an additional N35,000 for six months.

“Other States did the same thing and distributed palliatives to them. In Edo State, Governor Obaseki has been mute.

“No civil servant got any extra money like their counterparts in other States. Let us begin the conversation from there.

“Obaseki should explain to Edo civil servants and Edo people what he did with the N5 billion. Nobody in Edo State has gotten any palliatives or cash transfers from the Edo State Government. What has Obaseki spent the money on?”

A Nigerian bride shared her experience of how her pastor instructed her to remove her false eyelashes during her church wedding.

Jessica Okah, the bride, disclosed this incident on TikTok, mentioning that the pastor had raised the issue of her eyelashes before the wedding day.

However, she said she had completely forgotten about it and thought it would be overlooked during the wedding.

She said, “What would you do if your pastor asked you to remove your lashes in the middle of your wedding ceremony? It was like a movie, but it was happening for real.

“After my husband’s family accepted me, that’s when my pastor realised that he told me the day before that I wasn’t supposed to wear lashes to the wedding ceremony.

“Let me not lie, I didn’t have a problem with it anyway, but truthfully, I forgot.

“He said before the service had to continue, I had to go and remove the lashes.”

She shared a video that captured the moment her pastor stopped the wedding proceedings over her eyelashes and resumed the ceremony after she had taken them off.

Oyo Nurses Threaten To Embark On Indefinite Strike, Issue 14-Day Ultimatum

0

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives in Oyo state have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if their requests are not met.

They issued a two-week ultimatum to the state government.

In a letter addressed to Governor Seyi Makinde‘s led government on May 2, 2024, the council expressed their decision after a meeting held on Tuesday to discuss issues related to the well-being and career advancement of nurses employed by the state government.

The letter, titled ‘Notification of 14 days ultimatum,’ was signed by the council’s Chairman, Adeyemi Samuel, and Secretary, Aina Emmanuel.

The nurses’ demands include addressing staff shortages, rectifying incorrect promotion dates on letters, and implementing the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure, among other issues.

The ultimatum, which began on May 2, 2024, will conclude on May 21, 2024. If their demands are not met, the indefinite strike will commence at midnight on May 22, 2024.

Nigeria is currently witnessing a significant outflow of healthcare professionals, including nurses and midwives, due to factors such as inadequate compensation, escalating insecurity, insufficient diagnostic facilities, unfavourable working conditions, and economic challenges.

In October 2023, Michael Nnachi, the President of NANNM, informed journalists that on a weekly basis, nurses and midwives submit applications to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, seeking either to depart the country or be relieved of their responsibilities.

During the period of 2017 to 2022, Nnachi stated that more than 57,000 nurses migrated from Nigeria in search of better opportunities overseas.

As a result of this significant exodus, the remaining nurses are burdened with excessive workloads.

The Nurses and Midwives’ letter to Governor Makinde reads: “It’s pertinent to note that all these issues have been for a very long time, and several letters have been written for the government to come to our aid without a positive response. Hence, we would be compelled to commence an indefinite strike at the expiration of our ultimatum if the following requests/prayers are not granted.

“Our prayers include – Mass recruitment of Nurses and Midwives/Nurse Educator into Hospitals Management Board, Primary Health Care Board, the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho and Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences, Eleyele, Ibadan, to address the gross shortage of staff to improve health care delivery in the state.

“Correction of the wrong notional date on the promotion letters issued to our members. Adoption and implementation of the 25 per cent CONHESS adjustment circular for Nurses and Midwives working with the Oyo State Government.

“Financial implementation of 2018 to 2022 promotion for Nurses and Midwives working in LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Ogbomosho. Adoption and implementation of Enhanced Hazard Allowances for Nurses and Midwives Working in LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Ogbomosho, Oyo State College of Nursing Eleyele-Ibadan, Oyo State College of Health Technology Eleyele-Ibadan and Primary Health Care Development Board/LGA.”

Furthermore, they are requesting the introduction and execution of horizontal conversion/career advancement for Nurses and Midwives on GL12 and higher who hold nursing science degree certificates, the release of unpaid January/February 2011 salaries to nurses awaiting payment, and the provision of uniform allowance to all Nurses and Midwives employed by Oyo state following public service regulations.

“If all the aforementioned prayers are not met within 14 working days, the State Executive Council of NANNM will have no option than to direct her members to proceed on indefinite strike till when all these demands are met,” the letter added.

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been barred from voting in the upcoming local elections due to his inability to provide valid identification. According to the Electoral Commission, Johnson, who has been a vocal critic of the UK’s voter ID laws, was turned away from the polling station in his constituency in London.

A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission confirmed the incident, stating, “Mr. Johnson was unable to provide the required identification to cast his vote. Our staff tried to assist him, but unfortunately, he did not have the necessary documents.”

The local election officials also corroborated the story, saying, “We had to follow the rules and couldn’t make an exception, even for a former Prime Minister.”

The incident has sparked a debate over the controversial voter ID laws, which were introduced by the Conservative government in 2022. Opponents argue that the laws disenfranchise vulnerable voters, while supporters claim they prevent electoral fraud.

Labour Party spokesperson, Emily Thornberry, said, “This incident highlights the absurdity of the government’s own rules. If a former Prime Minister can’t even vote, how can we expect ordinary citizens to navigate this complex system? It’s a clear example of the government’s voter suppression tactics. We need to repeal these laws and ensure every citizen can exercise their right to vote.”

The Liberal Democrats, who have also opposed the laws, added, “This is a clear example of the government’s voter suppression tactics. We need to repeal these laws and ensure every citizen can exercise their right to vote.”

Johnson’s office has declined to comment on the incident, but sources close to the former Prime Minister say he is “frustrated” and “disappointed” by the situation.

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the need for electoral reform and the importance of ensuring every citizen’s right to vote.

This new exchange rate for import duties surpasses the official market rate of the naira, which stood at N1,402.67/$ on May 2, 2024, according to official market data. In comparison, the parallel market recorded the naira closing at N1,380 against the greenback on the same day.

Over the past two weeks, the naira has experienced considerable depreciation, marking a contrast to its strong performance in March, where it was hailed as the best performing currency globally by Goldman Sachs.

The new month began on a negative trajectory for the naira, witnessing a 0.74% decline to N1,360/$ compared to the final trading day of April.

In response to these fluctuations, the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to take action to curb inflation and instill stability to facilitate business planning.

Despite being released on administrative bail earlier due to their status as public figures, the defendants have failed to appear for possible arraignment in court.

The protesters, who are affiliated with the APC Loyalists Forum, are calling for the EFCC to investigate all outstanding petitions against Matawalle, including allegations of contract fraud, embezzlement, and diversion of funds totaling N70 billion during his tenure as governor of the state from 2019 to 2023.

The protesters, who were seen holding placards and banners, chanted slogans and demanded that the EFCC take action against Matawalle, who they accused of perpetrating massive corruption and looting of the state’s resources.

They also called for the EFCC to investigate other officials who served in Matawalle’s administration, alleging that they were complicit in the corruption and mismanagement of the state’s funds.

The protesters presented a letter to the EFCC, which was received by the Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, on behalf of the agency’s chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa. In response, Uwujaren assured the protesters that the EFCC is committed to thoroughly investigating every corruption case, and that the agency will pursue all cases to a logical conclusion. He also commended the protesters for their courage and determination in seeking justice and accountability.

The protesters’ action is the latest development in the ongoing efforts to hold Matawalle accountable for his alleged corrupt activities while in office.

The former governor has previously denied any wrongdoing and has accused his political opponents of orchestrating the allegations against him. However, the protesters and other critics have vowed to continue pushing for his prosecution and conviction, saying that he must be held accountable for his actions.”

Naira Free Fall: CBN Gov Blames Rising Number Of Nigerians Schooling Abroad, Medical Tourism

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Yemi Cardoso, has attributed the current surge in food prices nationwide to the federal government’s procurement and distribution of palliatives.

In the aftermath of President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, the Federal Government allocated N5 billion to each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the purchase of food items intended for distribution to the underprivileged.

Cardoso voiced his concerns during the March Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, as documented on the CBN’s website. He highlighted that despite a hike in interest rates in February, inflationary pressures persisted.

He stated, “Despite noticeable stability in the foreign exchange market resulting from decisions taken at that 293rd MPC meeting, inflationary pressure remains unabated. While there is the argument that the significant tightening since the last MPC meeting is yet to fully permeate the system and yield its expected impact, the risk of galloping inflation persists.”

Cardoso emphasized that the government’s substantial purchases of food items for distribution as palliatives exacerbated food price inflation. He pointed out that this added another layer to inflation, compounded by seasonal factors such as price increases during religious fasting and festive periods.

Addressing the emerging sources of inflation, Cardoso stressed the importance of fiscal authorities complementing the efforts of monetary policy to address the issue effectively.

Echoing Cardoso’s sentiments, another MPC committee member, Bala Bello, highlighted the concerning rise in inflation, attributing it to high production costs, ongoing security challenges, and exchange rate pressures.

Bello commended the Federal Government’s initiatives aimed at tackling food insecurity, including the release of grains from strategic reserves, distribution of seeds and fertilizers, and support for dry season farming. He underscored the importance of decisive and coordinated efforts to curb inflation, given its adverse effects on citizens’ purchasing power, investment decisions, and overall economic performance.

Nigerian Actors, Yinka Quadri And Ogogo Finally Reconcile, Hug It Out After Feuding For Years (Video)

0

Popular Nigerian actors, Yinka Quadri and Taiwo ‘Ogogo’ Hassan, seem to have reconciled after years of fighting.

The actors ended their years-long rift at the housewarming and birthday party of Yomi Fabiyi, another Yoruba actor, in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

The star-studded event witnessed the attendance of actors such as Baba Wande, Ladi Folarin, Iya Rainbow, Shola Kosoko, Toyosi Adesanya, and Peju Ajiboye.

In the now-viral video, Sulaiman Ajobiewe, the chanter, urged the actors to bury the hatchet regardless of who was at fault.

“I pray God’s mercy upon you both. Whatever the issue, let it end here. We cannot live without occasionally offending one another,” he chanted in Yoruba language.

“I implore you, in the name of God, embrace each other and let this be the end of it. I plead with you using my parents’ names to put this matter to rest. Let’s forgive and forget for the sake of God.”

Moments later, Quadri and Hassan could be seen hugging each other as Yinka sprayed money on the peacemaker.

The actors were once close allies. Their friendship, however, hit the rock many years ago — with the cause of the feud yet to be known.

The rift became obvious when Quadri failed to attend Ogogo’s daughter’s wedding and naming ceremonies.

VP Shettima Drops Bombshell: Buhari Not to Blame for Nigeria’s Woes!

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has asserted that the challenges encountered by the present administration upon assuming office on May 29 cannot be solely attributed to the immediate-past administration led by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking at a roundtable hosted by the 21st Century Chronicle, Shettima emphasized that President Bola Tinubu made a tough decision for the country’s benefit rather than opting for an easier path.

He stated, “The president chose the option that would save the lives of the people instead of prolonging economic turmoil. We refrain from laying blame on previous administrations as leadership requires courage and continuity.”

Before the current administration assumed office, one of the major challenges faced was the issue of fuel subsidy removal, which had persisted for 20 to 30 years, according to Shettima. He explained that there was insufficient budgetary provision for it in the fiscal year, leading to the need for its removal.

A year before we took office, Nigeria’s debt service to revenue ratio had grown to 111.18 percent, posing a significant economic threat,” Shettima continued. Our debt service ratio meant that for every N100,000 earned, an additional N11,800 had to be borrowed to service debts. This was unsustainable.”

Consequently, the administration had to make the difficult decision to jettison the subsidy regime, despite it being a bitter pill to swallow.

Shettima also highlighted a past incident where a presidential candidate in the previous election pointed to Argentina as a model for Nigeria’s economic trajectory. However, within weeks, Argentina experienced a surge in inflation, underscoring the complexities of governance.

Shettima emphasized that governance requires strategic decision-making tailored to Nigeria’s unique circumstances, rather than blindly copying models from other countries.

ASUU Shuts Down University of Abuja as Dispute with Management Escalates

ASUU strike update

The University of Abuja chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has initiated an indefinite strike starting from Thursday, May 2. Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, the Chairman of the branch, confirmed this decision, which was reached during a congress meeting held at the institution’s Permanent Site.

The ASUU members at the University of Abuja have been in disagreement with the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, regarding the process for appointing a new VC.

This conflict arose following the publication of an advertorial in a national daily on March 15, 2024, calling for applications for the position of the Vice-Chancellor to replace Na’Allah.

However, ASUU members rejected the advertisement during a conference, deeming it “illegal” and asserting that it did not originate from the governing council. According to Dr. Ugoh, the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993, as amended in 2003 and 2012 (Section 3, subsections 1 and 2), grants exclusive authority to the governing council to advertise the vacancy for the VC position when it becomes available.

Dr. Ugoh emphasized that no other entity or individual possesses the legal authority to initiate the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.

There Is No Core Ijaw And Non-Core Ijaw In Bayelsa State, It’s Just A Propaganda Against Senator Dickson

Bayelsa is a State in the Southern region of Nigeria, which is majorly dominated by the Ijaws with an estimated population of 0.9 million. The Ijaws were living as minority in most Southern States before the creation of Bayelsa State by Late General Sani Abacha in 1996.

The name ‘Bayelsa’ is an acronym of three Local Government Areas; Brass, Yenagoa and Sagbama which were the three local government areas in the then Rivers State. There are four major dialects in Bayelsa State; Izon, Nembe, Ogbia and Epie-Atissa.

Bayelsa State is generally known as the headquarters of the Ijaw nation, as the only State majorly dominated by the Ijaw speaking people in the Southern region of Nigeria, regardless of the differential dialects.

Bayelsans who are publicly known as Ijaws, have always lived together peacefully and unitedly since the creation of the State in 1996, without any form of segregation of people from any local government area or senatorial district respectively.

The State has had Six(6) Executive Governors; Late DSP Alamieyeseigha, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Chief Timipre Sylva, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and Sen. Douye Diri since the creation of the State with the Practice of a Democratic System of Government in Nigeria in 1999.

The State has had experienced and development-oriented governors who made relentless efforts and tremendous contributions in different sectors of the State’s economy towards the growth and development of the State, as a virgin State.

The respective State Governors have made meaningful contributions in different sectors towards the growth and development of the State, and the improvement in the welfare of the citizens over the years basically.

Bayelsa may not have achieved the desired growth and development in comparison with other states created in 1996 by Late General Sani Abacha, but successive administrations has made meaningful contributions and improvement in most sectors of the State.

The Restoration Government led by His Excellency, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson made tremendous improvements in most sectors of the State, which laid the foundation for the Prosperity Government led by His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri.

The Restoration Government and the Prosperity Government, are governments of all-inclusiveness, unification, development, peace and stability, as the people’s oriented administrations respectively.

The Genesis Of The Core Ijaw And Non-Core Ijaw Propaganda Against Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.

The build up to the 2019 Gubernatorial election in the State under the Restoration Government led by Senator Dickson, as then Governor; the people of Bayelsa East Senatorial District wanted the Governorship ticket or the Deputy Governorship ticket basically.

The struggle and power tussle to produce the governorship candidate or deputy governorship candidate under the PDP, created a lot of political tension, disagreements, alignments and realignments among political gladiators and leaders in the state, which led to the defection of politicians from one party to another.

Senator Henry Seriake Dickson as then Governor, stood his ground gallantly to produce a successor, in order to continue the solid foundation laid by his administration of all-inclusiveness, peace, unity, stability and development basically.

Senator Dickson as an experienced politician and leader in his wisdom, deemed it necessary and pertinent to favor the people of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, by giving the governorship ticket to Senator Douye Diri, as then Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The people of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, are perceived and regarded as minority with the smallest population in the State, since the creation of Bayelsa State in 1996 by Late General Sani Abacha.

Senator Dickson’s unrelenting and unwavering zeal and commitment in forming a formidable successive administration with leaders of vision, experience and competence, picked Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo as a running mate, as then Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The political atmosphere became tensed with a lot of unsatisfied interests, mostly political leaders and stakeholders from Bayelsa East who were desperately interested of the leadership of the state, but were not favored by then Governor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.

Senator Dickson’s refusal to grant the demand of political leaders and stakeholders of Bayelsa East to produce the governorship candidate or the deputy governorship candidate under the PDP, led to the propaganda of Core Ijaw and Non-Core Ijaw against Dickson as then Governor.

Setting the record straight; Bayelsa East had Deputy Governor and Secretary to the State Government for eight years, State PDP Chairman, Commissioner for Finance, and other sensitive appointments under the Restoration Government led by Senator Dickson as then Governor.

It is imperative to state that the people of Bayelsa East were favored under Senator Dickson far more than they were favored by their illustrious Son, Chief Timipre Sylva as Governor. Core Ijaw and Non-Core is nothing but a propaganda against Senator.

As then Governor, Senator Dickson gave political appointments to Ijaws even in other States outside Bayelsa, for the purpose and vision of togetherness, unity, peace and all-inclusiveness of the Ijaw people.

Senator Dickson has always being a believer and builder of the Ijaw nation, as a product and founding father of the Ijaw struggle from the days of the old Rivers State. He has being a voice of the Ijaw nation in the National Assembly, as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Bayelsa State is regarded as the headquarters of the Ijaw nation, as the only State that is dominated by the Ijaws in Nigeria and beyond. There should be no segregation of any dialect, in bid to score a political point for personal political gains.

Politicians from Bayelsa East that are responsible for the sponsorship of the Core Ijaw and Non-Core propaganda against Senator Dickson and Governor Douye Diri, should stop forthwith. Bayelsans are one indivisible people as Ijaws, regardless of differential dialects.

The time for politics has come and gone, and it’s time for governance to bring the desired development, peace and stability to the state, irrespective of political party affiliation as one united and indivisible people.
