APC Suspends Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Details Emerge

Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that the President Bola Tinubu administration has subsidized the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage with N90 billion, amidst widespread economic hardship in the country. Shettima made this announcement at the inauguration of the 2024 National Hajj operation in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

The Vice President explained that the government had to intervene due to the fluctuation in foreign exchange rates, which posed a significant challenge in announcing the final hajj fare. He praised President Tinubu’s efforts to control the downward spiral of the local currency, which ultimately led to a reduction in the fare.

Shettima emphasized the importance of religious pilgrimage in transforming the lives of believers and acknowledged the government’s careful selection of administrators to manage the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He assured pilgrims that the government is committed to their safety, security, and comfort during the journey.

The Vice President urged pilgrims to continue praying for the success of the Tinubu administration, peace, and progress of the country. He emphasized that collective prayers and individual contributions are crucial for the prosperity of Nigeria.

Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, urged Nigerian pilgrims to exhibit discipline and project a positive image of Nigeria. He thanked the federal government for its efforts in ensuring the success of the 2024 hajj and expressed hope for continued good leadership.

This development highlights the government’s commitment to supporting religious pilgrimages despite economic challenges. However, the subsidy has raised questions about the government’s priorities amidst widespread hardship and the need for effective resource allocation.

The suspension letter, signed by 16 members of the APC Executive Committee of Igbotako Ward 11 in Okitipupa Local Government Area, cited Senator Ibrahim’s decision to sue the party and his actions contrary to the party’s constitution. The letter stated that despite a meeting with the National Party Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, where aspirants were urged to cooperate with the incumbent Governor, Senator Ibrahim proceeded to sue the Governor and APC.

Furthermore, the letter accused Senator Ibrahim of engaging in anti-party activities by encouraging his supporters to join the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) and claiming he would receive the gubernatorial ticket from them.

The senator’s actions in the Federal High Court in Abuja and derogatory remarks about APC in various media outlets were also cited as evidence of his intent to disrupt the party.

The suspension, effective immediately, was made in accordance with Article 21, Section A of the APC Constitution. This development highlights the party’s commitment to discipline and adherence to its constitution.

In addition to the federal constituency, INEC also announced existing vacancies in three state constituencies: Khana 2 State Constituency in Rivers state, Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency in Kano State, and Zaria Kewaye State Constituency in Kaduna State.

These vacancies were occasioned by the death or resignation of the members.

Prof. Yakubu revealed that preparations are underway for bye-elections in the affected constituencies, with dates to be announced soon. He also addressed the disrupted February 3 rerun elections in Enugu and Kano states, which were marred by violence and thuggery, leading to the suspension of the election.

This exercise is crucial ahead of the off-cycle governorship elections in both states.

Breaking: Labour directs workers to shut operations, begin nationwide strike Monday

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have expressed deep disappointment and rejected the Federal Government’s proposed N48,000 minimum wage, describing it as an insult to Nigerian workers.

The labour unions made this known at a joint press conference in Abuja, stating that the government’s proposal falls short of meeting their needs and aspirations.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, noted that the Organised Private Sector proposed an initial offer of N54,000, while the least paid workers in the private sector receive N78,000, highlighting the stark disparity between the proposed minimum wage and prevailing standards.

Ajaero emphasized that the government’s failure to provide substantiated data to support their offer exacerbates the situation, undermining the credibility of the negotiation process and eroding trust between the parties involved.

The labour unions walked out of the negotiation process, citing the government’s apparent lack of seriousness in engaging in fair negotiations.

However, they remain committed to advocating for the rights and interests of Nigerian workers and are willing to engage in reasonable dialogue with the government if they show serious commitment to finding a fair and sustainable resolution.

The labour unions are pushing for a minimum wage of N615,000, which they believe reflects the true value of the contributions made by Nigerian workers to the nation’s development and the objective socioeconomic realities that confront Nigerians today.

The development comes after President Bola Tinubu pledged to ensure a living wage for Nigerian workers, and a 37-member panel was established to recommend a new national minimum wage for the country.

The panel is chaired by the former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Goni Aji, and has members from federal and state governments, the private sector, and organised labour.

Justin insists that she scammed her followers of their hard-earned money, revealing that she bought 2 cars and 2 houses over the last two years.

The doctor further buttressed his claims by sharing a voice recording of the dancer’s sister where she was heard saying Korra had the money but needed a different one from her fans to fight against Justin.

The sister was also said Korra’s fans love to be scammed as a response to people calling the dancer a scammer.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), has approved Section 2 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway for construction for ₦1.6 trillion.

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, made this known on Tuesday while speaking to State House correspondents after the weekly FEC meeting in Abuja.

Umahi stated that the council approved the award of a contract for the reconstruction of the Koton-Karfe -Abaji Road (Abuja-bound) along the Abuja-Lokoja Route in Kogi state at a cost of ₦89 billion.

He also revealed that the FEC approved the award of the contract for the equalisation of Lokoja-Benin Road, Okpela Section, Lokoja-Benin, Dualised Auchi Section -Uromi Link Road, and Lokoja-Benin Road, Ekpoma Section.

The minister revealed that BUA Cement will finance the reconstruction of the road at a cost of ₦120 Billion under the Tax Credit Scheme.

Umahi also said the Council approved contracts to various contractors to build roads and bridges in Kaima-Tesse, Kwara State, Benin-Agbor, BeninByepass and Ngaski-Wara in Kebbi State. All the four contracts will cost ₦546 billion.

The minister disclosed that CCECC was awarded the contract for ₦230 billion to build the Kano Bypass. He noted that the 37 km long road will include bridges and several flyovers, and the company has 36 months to complete the work.

Shell Fire Incident: Gas Price Hike Looms In Nigeria

Shell Fire Incident: Gas Price Hike Looms In Nigeria

The fire on Tuesday in Shell’s Gbaran facility in Bayelsa may raise the price of Liquefied Natural Gas in Nigeria.

This comes against the backdrop of the surge in the country’s price of Liquefied Petroleum gas.

On Tuesday, explosions and sightings of smoke erupted at Shell’s Gbaran facility.

The facility is the most critical in Nigeria’s LNG gas feedstock project and processes almost 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily.

Despite the incident, Shell assured that the incident would not necessitate an immediate operational shutdown of the facility.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the company said it is taking steps to investigate the specifics of the incident and assess any potential impacts on its operations.

“We are actively monitoring reports of smoke detected near our Gbaran Central Processing Facility in Bayelsa State.

“While the source appears to be external to our facility, we are in close communication with regulatory authorities to look into the incident and ensure the safety of the surrounding communities,”it said.

Recall that in April, Engr Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), said the government raised the commercial wholesale gas price by 11 per cent from $2.50 per Metric Million British Thermal Unit to $2.92/MMBtu.

The implication is that electricity generation companies in other sectors driven by LNG now pay more to buy gas.

Still, the Liquified Petroleum Gas, a by-product of natural gas processing and crude oil refining Nigerians use for cooking, has also increased.

Ejes Gist News reports that the price of a 12.5-kilogram cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, also known as cooking gas, increased by 46.88 per cent yearly.

The price of LPG has remained high despite the federal government’s value-added tax waivers for product imports since last year.

Nigeria relies on LPG imports to meet its 50 per cent consumption.

Speaking on the development in a telephone interview with Ejes Gist News, Barr Ameh Madaki, an Oil gas expert and Managing Partner of BBH Consult, said the Gbaran Shell’s facility is responsible for LNG to gencos in Nigeria and most of the product’s export.

He said the Nigerian government must ban the export of LNG and LPG to bring down the price of LPG.

“Nigeria can not export LNG, yet, it imports LPG. It is strange economics.

“If the government is serious about reducing the price of LPG, it should ban the export of LNG and LPG.

“LPG should be piped to Nigerians’ homes; it is better than the gas flaring in Nigeria”, he told Ejes Gist News.

Ancelotti Reveals Real Madrid Star Won’t Win Ballon D’Or

Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti has stated that midfielder, Toni Kroos will not win the Ballon d’Or award in 2024.

Ancelotti, who admitted he would like to see Kroos win the Ballon d’Or, said the Germany international could fight for the award if he wins the Champions League and the Euro 2024 this summer.

With both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo now playing their football outside Europe, there may be a real opportunity for someone else to claim the honour.

Kroos has been brilliant for Real Madrid this season.

The 34-year-old bagged an assist in Madrid’s 5-0 win over Alaves on Tuesday night.

Speaking about the possibility of the former Bayern Munich star winning the Ballon d’Or, Ancelotti said (via @MadridXtra):

“Ballon d’Or for Kroos? Yes I would like it but he won’t win it. Or maybe…anything can happen.

“There is the Euro this summer, if he wins the Champions League and the Euro with Germany… he could fight for the Ballon d’Or.”

Breaking News Nigeria

The Delta State House of Assembly has suspended one of its members, Matthew Omonade, representing Ughelli North 1 state constituency, for 14 days over alleged gross misconduct. The suspension was announced by the Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor, on Tuesday, May 14, following a motion raised by the majority leader, Emeka Nwaobi.

According to the motion, which was supported by the House Chief Whip, Perkins Umukoro, and unanimously adopted by the House, Omonade was accused of “willfully and falsely perverting the proceedings of the House” on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. This, the majority leader claimed, violates the standing orders and rules of the House, hence the need for the suspension.

The motion, entitled “Motion of breach of privilege,” cited the House of Assembly (Powers and Privileges) Law, Cap H6, Laws of Delta State, 2008, which provides for the rights enjoyed by the House collectively and by members individually. It also stated that it is an offense for any person to willfully publish any false or perverted report of any debate or proceedings of the House or a committee, or willfully misrepresent any speech made by a member in the House or in a committee.

Omonade’s suspension has sparked debate among political observers, who see it as a move to maintain discipline and order in the House.

However, others have expressed concern over the fairness and justness of the suspension, calling for a more thorough investigation into the allegations before such a drastic measure is taken.

According the speaker, 14-day suspension is a warning to other lawmakers to adhere to the rules and standing orders of the House, and to maintain the dignity and integrity of the legislative arm of government.
