In a recent legal development, actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin has been convicted by the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, for the act of spraying and stepping on new Naira notes during a friend’s wedding in Lagos.

The trial judge, Chukwujekwu Aneke, sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment with an alternative of a N300,000 fine, as reported by Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media & Publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Omoseyin is an actress arrest on February 1, 2023, came after a viral video showed her spraying new Naira notes at a wedding in Lekki, Lagos State, on January 28, 2023. The incident occurred during a period of Naira scarcity following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s withdrawal of old 200, 500, and 1000 Naira notes from circulation.

Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin Guilty 

Initially arraigned on February 13, 2023, for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act 2007 on the handling of Naira notes, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin pleaded “not guilty” and was granted bail on February 15, 2023. However, during the recent hearing, she changed her plea to “guilty” after reviewing the evidence against her.

The prosecuting counsel, Z.B. Atiku, presented an EFCC operative, Abubakar Mohammed Marafa, who outlined the details of the arrest. Marafa disclosed that the defendant sprayed N200 and N100 Naira notes at the wedding, as confirmed by her statement and video evidence found on her phone. The judge admitted the ICPC letter, extra-judicial statement, forensic report of her phone, video footage, and other documents as exhibits.

In a plea for leniency, Omoseyin’s defense counsel, Afuye Adegbola, emphasized her being a first-time offender, a mother of one, and expressed her remorse. The judge, Mr. Aneke, sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment or a N300,000 fine, effective from Thursday.

Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin was arrested by ICPC operatives along Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, and the viral video showed her flaunting the new Naira notes.

She claimed to have received the money from her fans at the party and asserted that she did not know the individuals who gave her the cash. Items recovered at the point of arrest included a Range Rover.

Despite legal provisions against such actions, the act of spraying Naira notes at social events remains prevalent in Nigeria. Enforcement by relevant security agencies is sporadic, allowing some high-profile incidents to go unaddressed.
