Nigerians have been asked to refrain from consuming hides (ponmo), smoked meat, and bush meat until the situation is under control, as they pose a grave risk.

The initial report of the anthrax outbreak was made in northern Ghana, bordering Burkina Faso and Togo, placing the entire subregion at risk.

The assertion read;

The disease that has claimed some lives is a zoonotic bacterial disease that affects both animals and humans. Soil contains naturally occurring anthrax spores, which commonly infect domestic and wild animals.

“Anthrax spores can infect humans if they come into contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.” However, Anthrax is not contagious, so it cannot be transmitted through close contact with an infected person. “Signs of anthrax include flu-like symptoms, such as cough, fever, and muscle aches, which, if not diagnosed and treated promptly, can lead to pneumonia, severe lung problems, difficulty breathing, shock, and death.”

Nigerians have also been cautioned against close contact with unvaccinated Anthrax-carrying animals, as the disease is easily transmitted to humans via inhalation of Anthrax spores and consumption of contaminated/infected animal products, such as hides and skin, meat or milk.
