The Rivers State House of Assembly has announced plans to re-screen and re-confirm nine former Commissioners who resigned from the state executive council on Wednesday.

This decision, outlined in a statement by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, marks a crucial step in the state’s political landscape.

The list of commissioners slated for re-evaluation includes prominent figures such as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), Commissioner for Works, Dr Des George-Kelly, and Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs Inime Aguma, among others.

The backdrop to this development lies in the wave of resignations that swept through the State’s Executive Council on December 16, 2023, triggered by the political crisis between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The reinstatement of these former commissioners emerged as a crucial aspect of President Tinubu’s peace agreement with Governor Fubara. During the height of the crisis, the state governor’s drastic move to demolish the state Assembly complex and the declaration of the seats of 27 pro-Wike lawmakers as vacant added intensity to the political turmoil.

Governor Fubara, in a bid to restore stability, presented the state’s 2024 budget to the Ehie faction and signed the N800 billion budget into law, pledging full implementation.

Subsequently, commissioners loyal to Wike resigned, paving the way for a peace resolution document brokered by President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders at a crucial meeting in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The eight-point peace deal is expected to guide the path to political harmony in Rivers State.
