Security Agencies Have No Right to Declare Anyone a Terror Financier.
Renowned Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has strongly contested the authority of security agencies to label individuals as terror financiers without due process. His remarks come in the wake of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit’s (NFIU) designation of one of his associates, Tukur Mamu, and 14 others as terror financiers.

According to the NFIU, Mamu allegedly participated in financing terrorism by facilitating ransom payments exceeding $200,000 US to support ISWAP terrorists in the release of hostages from the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
Gumi, who cautioned against conducting a trial by media, emphasized that Mamu’s case is currently before the courts, and any judgment should emanate from there. He insisted that if Mamu is found culpable, he should face the consequences.
However, he underscored the importance of allowing the judicial process to run its course without preconceived judgments.
In response to the recent developments, Gumi expressed his disapproval, stating, “Mamu’s case is in the court. Let’s wait to hear from the court. It’s wrong to resort to media trial. Let’s wait for the court to state if he is a financier or not.”
Questioning the authority of security agencies in such matters, Gumi raised concerns about the premature judgment of individuals before a court ruling. He stressed, “Who declares someone a terrorist financier? Is it the court of law or a security agency? Security agency has no right to declare anyone a terrorist financier.”
Gumi, known for his advocacy for dialogue and reconciliation in addressing security challenges, highlighted the need for transparency and adherence to legal processes. He reiterated his commitment to justice, stating, “That is what we wanted all along; take him to court.
