The Defence Headquarters has asserted that the Christmas Eve massacres in various Plateau State communities, resulting in nearly 200 deaths, numerous injuries, and widespread displacement, were orchestrated with the intention of embarrassing and undermining the Federal Government. The attacks coincided with the seventh month of President Tinubu’s tenure.

In an interview with Channels TV on Monday, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, expressed deep regret over the unfortunate incidents in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi. He emphasized that there was no justifiable reason for the brutal attacks, describing them as a deliberate effort to embarrass everyone and discredit the government.

Addressing the delayed military response to distress calls from the affected villages, Mr. Musa confirmed ongoing arrests linked to the Christmas Eve killings in Plateau. Last week, Peoples Gazette reported over 112 deaths and 47 injuries resulting from coordinated attacks by armed herdsmen across at least 12 communities.

President Bola Tinubu, condemning the acts, has ordered the provision of relief materials for survivors. Vice President Kashim Shettima and government officials visited Plateau State to offer condolences to the families of victims.

In his New Year message, President Tinubu omitted reference to the Christmas Eve attack, asserting improved security since assuming office in May. However, Amnesty International criticized the President for failing to protect communities, both in Plateau State and across Nigeria.

As public outcry escalated, international bodies, including the United Nations, France, and the U.S., condemned the attacks. They urged the Federal Government to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing the need for accountability and ensuring the safety of communities.
