President Bola Tinubu, in a visit to Akure, Ondo State, appealed for patience from Nigerians amidst the current economic challenges, assuring them that there is a brighter future ahead. Tinubu acknowledged the hardships resulting from government policies and took full responsibility, emphasizing that he welcomed criticisms as the one who sought to be Nigeria’s President.

During his visit, Tinubu met with the leader of the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organization, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, and paid condolences to the family of the late former Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu. The economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal, implemented by Tinubu have faced public backlash due to increased living costs, food inflation, and other consequences, leading to nationwide protests organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress.
Addressing concerns over his economic policies, Tinubu stated, “Nigeria will survive the current economic challenges. There is light at the end of the tunnel. I requested the job, and I am not complaining about it. I take full responsibility.” He emphasized his commitment to leading Nigeria toward economic and social prosperity, navigating challenges with wisdom and determination.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of fiscal and true federalism in his reform agenda and expressed gratitude for the understanding and support of Nigerians during these temporary economic conditions. He pledged to re-engineer the country’s finances, curb selfish interests, and build an efficient Nigeria that is inclusive and fair.
Speaking on behalf of Afenifere, Pa Olu Falae commended Tinubu for his dedication to Nigeria’s progress and expressed support for his administration’s efforts. He urged the President to focus on institutional reforms, strengthen the federation, and enhance security, food production, and infrastructural development.
In response, Tinubu assured Nigerians that their patience and perseverance would not be in vain. He stressed the importance of managing the current challenges wisely, drawing inspiration from Lagos, which emerged as the fifth-largest economy in Africa through perseverance.
The President reiterated his determination not to allow Nigeria’s economy to be exploited, emphasizing a commitment to re-engineering finances and pursuing lasting solutions. The visit also included a condolence visit to Akeredolu’s family, where Tinubu praised the late governor as a statesman and dedicated legal luminary.
Tinubu extended prayers for the prosperity of Owo Kingdom, appreciating the support of the people and the southern governors’ contributions to Akeredolu’s burial. The widow expressed gratitude for the President’s visit and acknowledged the immense support, particularly from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in repatriating Akeredolu’s remains to Nigeria.
